Picnic at Botanical Gardens

Aaah, luckily the weather was still sunny here in England at the start of September. So, we had taken full advantage of this rare occasion (lol) and decided to have a picnic! Although picnics can be a bit fiddly, especially with the heat and the bugs around.. we're glad to say ours went quite well!

So, there are many places, parks, national trust areas to have a picnic. Initially, we were spoilt for choice on where to go especially knowing that most parks and such areas would be quite crowded with families as well as children. After thinking about it, we ended up picnicking at the Botanical Gardens in Birmingham. As our readers will know, we love going to new places and neither have us have visited the gardens before. So, as well as our first ever picnic, it was also our first outing to the gardens.

We didn't want to overload ourselves with food. I think the worst thing at a picnic could be the fact you carry loads of food around with you, only for it to be wasted or even worse, picked at by bugs (eeeew!). So that's why, beforehand, we went shopping for what we would eat. I know that's not very traditional as we'd both prefer to have made food at home, however as it was quite a spontaneous thing, and neither of us had time to prepare food beforehand, we purchased things from the supermarket.

We bought essentials such as disposable plates and napkins, as well as cutlery and glasses to give it a nice picnic feel :). In most supermarkets, there are salad/deli bars with a selection of fruits, salads, as well as pastas, dips and other treats. So, as well as staying away from unhealthy food and going for something different, we purchased two salad boxes (one for sweet treats such as fruit and meringues, and the other for savory things such as cous-cous salads and cold pasta). For the main part of our picnic, we both decided to have a 6-inch Subway sandwich (I know, typical students haha) which went quite well with the salads from the deli. And for dessert, we decided to have fresh cream strawberry trifles, with a box of candy floss too as we both have a big sweet tooth! Ideally, it's best to keep picnic food light as well as healthy, not indulging in heavy food as it'll only make you feel bloated and sickly afterwards.

All in all, we had a really good, cosy picnic. We definitely recommend picnics for a simply, inexpensive outing because even though it may sound a bit boring or dull, its actually quite fun. Be it with a group of friends, your whole family, kids or your other half...

Did you have a picnic in the summer just gone? If so, how was it..? Or are you planning to have one in the time to come? Feel free to comment or leave a question in the comments below! It's always nice hearing from our readers!

We'll be posting a bit randomly (as per) as we're both going back to uni! But make sure you keep updated by following us on Bloglovin!
